The Nisyros caldera is 4 kilometers wide. It formed during massive eruptions 25,000 and 15,000 years ago. Its centerpiece is the Stefanos Crater. You can safely explore this large crater floor on foot.

Entry costs €5 per adult. You will see steaming fumaroles and boiling mud up close. You must wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from the hot ground.

Polyvotis & Alexandros Craters

Fumarole Vents

10-15 minutesDo not touch vents

Small openings in the crater floor release hot gases and hissing steam. Bright yellow sulfur crystals surround these active vents. Temperatures here approach 100°C (212°F). Do not touch the vents or the crystals, as they will cause severe burns.
